What is Geriatric Rehabilitation

Aging is an inevitable process. Physiological changes are also inevitable as a result of aging. The care needs brought by those physiological changes are called “Geriatric Rehabilitation”. In fact, Geriatric Rehabilitation is not very different from other rehabilitation programs. Special programs are being developed based on the physiological and pathological conditions of elderly patients.

How Is Geriatric Rehabilitation Done?

Elderly patients are observed and reported before the rehabilitation program. It is important to identify general functional status of patients and to see whether the patients have neurological problems, lack of capacity in terms of muscle strength and joint movements. As a result of the report is implemented a physical therapy or rehabilitation program. Usually elderly people with these types are observed;

Elderly patients with physical disabilities (hemiplegia), elderly patients with chronic diseases (heart failure, chronic lung disease), elderly patients with no disease but have suffered the loss of physical strength, and fully-dependent very elderly patients. Patients’ general conditions are evaluated based on the type of people mentioned above. This assessment is extremely important for the patient’s rehabilitation. Treatment starts after delivering the reports of the patient to the doctor and related staff needed during the rehabilitation program.

What is being done during Geriatric Rehabilitation?

A special program is developed during the rehabilitation program based on the patient’s status. However, the following points are important for the programs for elderly patients.

Pain relief, if exists. Increase of joint movements (arm opening, leg stretching). In general, increasing the motor power. Developing the skills of elderly patients. Increasing the strength of patients.

Who Gets Geriatric Rehabilitation

Old people need attention and relevance just like a baby. For this reason, geriatric rehabilitation should be done continuously by the experts. Old age makes the human being physiologically unable to do the work he or she has done before. Therefore, the elderly may be more sensitive and often cranky. Psychological support is also included in the rehabilitation program.  Geriatric rehabilitation can also be applied to the four types of elderly people mentioned above.
